A jumble of mackerel, about to take their final gasp, perform a macabre dance to original music by René Lussier that carries us from the depths of the sea to the savannahs of Africa.

A FISHY BUSINESS is a video installation that is part of a body of work about the end of the gathering culture known as fishing. On a screen composed of 132 small canvasses suspended in the gallery space, a video projection shows a jumble of mackerel just pulled from the water. About to take their final gasp, they perform a macabre dance to original music by René Lussier that carries us from the depths of the sea to the savannahs of Africa. The projection screen, more than a mere surface for displaying an image, hangs as a 3dimensional object in the space. The projected image slips through the mini-canvasses creating a new vista of small, twinkling crosses on the wall.

This video installation was made possible with the support of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Centre de production DAÏMÕN. It was presented for the first time in 2005 at Oeil de poisson in Quebec City as part of the Manif d’art.

DAÏMÕN thanks its members, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Service des arts, de la culture et des lettres de la Ville de Gatineau and the Conseil régional des élus de l’Outaouais.

Born in the Magdalen Islands, Jean-Yves Vigneau studied fine arts at the University of Moncton and the University of Quebec in Montreal. His work includes sculpture, in situ, installation, video, drawing and photography. Many times the recipient of grants from the Quebec Council of Arts and Letters and the Canada Council for the Arts, he has presented many solo exhibitions and participated in numerous symposiums and other art events producing in situ works in Canada, Poland, Wales and Brazil. He has also produced fifteen permanent works in public spaces. Longtime active member of the artist-run centre network, he coordinated the project to create La Filature that has housed AXENÉO7 and DAÏMÕN since 2002.
