Newsletter | November – December 2016

Dear members and friends,

DAÏMÔN wish you a pleasant fall! Here is a glimpse of our activities in the coming weeks. We look forward to seeing you at these events!

Valérian MAZATAUD, “La fin de la terre”. 23 October to 26 November 2016
With “La fin de la terre” (“The End of the Earth”), Valérian explores issues around immigration through images of Canadian citizenship ceremonies. The title of the project is inspired by the Biblical passage at the origin of Canada’s national motto. Armed with a ten-year-old analogue video camera, he attended ceremonies across the country. Later reworking his video recordings digitally, he put in place a process out of which emerge rather cold, distant and intriguing images.

Marie-Andrée GODIN. 28 November to 18 December 2016
Marie-Andrée GODIN’s work examines the figure of the witch as a feminist symbol; magic; post-capitalism; and anarchy. Taking the witchcraft ritual “Drawing down the moon” as the point of departure of a narrative thread, Marie-Andrée will create her first video work in which, like a collage, still images will blend with moving images.

Saturday 26 November at 2:00 p.m., DAÏMÔN invites you to a unique event for its 30th anniversary! This day of presentations and discussions will be an opportunity to discover works by the artists Claude-Philippe BENOÎT, Kim KIELHOFNER and Michel LAFOREST, each of whom carried out a one-week creative residency in September. For this occasion, they have been invited to take up and interpret, each in their own way, elements from DAÏMÔN’s history. The presentations will continue with a discussion between the artists and the public around questions of preservation and perpetuating inherent to the media arts. The event will be followed by a reception with music, food and drink from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Thursday 8 December at 7:00 p.m., we invite you to “Électrons Libres”, a musical evening unlike any other. For this occasion DAÏMÔN has invited sound artists and local musicians to explore new paths in creating music through duo improvisations composed from scratch for the occasion. The American duo ELKA BONG (Al Margolis + Walter Wright) will then take over for a unique presentation in our region, don’t miss it!!
