Since 2001, Philippe Hamelin‘s work has been shown in galleries and at numerous festivals in Canada and around the world. In 2011, Axenéo7 (Gatineau) presented his first major solo exhibition. Since 2013, his work has been shown at Platform (Winnipeg), Occurrence, Dazibao, Galerie Joyce Yahouda (Montreal), Galerie des Arts visuels de l’Université Laval (Quebec City), Neutral Ground (Regina), Sporobole (Sherbrooke) and Platform (Munich), the Poppositions art fair (Brussels), Place M (Tokyo), Galleria Continua (Havana), as well as numerous festivals in Canada and abroad, including the Espace [IM] media festival (Sherbrooke), where he presented the installation La Fontaine et la Chute III in tandem with Julie Tremble.
In addition to the many programs he developed for SAW Vidéo as programmer (2006-2008), he was guest curator for the third and fourth editions of Galerie SAW’s Art Star video art biennial (Ottawa, 2007-2009), where he presented Libertinage esthétique, a program of video works by Tricia Middleton and Joel Taylor, as well as Manon Labrecque: Expéditions vidéo. In 2008, he presented the exhibition L’affect en effet as part of the FICFA at the Galerie sans nom (Moncton), and in 2009 he presented Paul Wong: Portraits vidéo at the Cinémathèque Québécoise (Montreal) and in Ottawa as part of the BC Scene festival organized by the National Arts Centre. In 2013, he represented Québec at the cultural competitions of the Jeux de la Francophonie (Nice), winning the silver medal in the sculpture-installation category. In 2015, he was awarded the prize for best experimental art film at the 33rd Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois. In 2014, he initiated the La Mirage project with Sophie Bélair Clément and Vincent Bonin. In 2017, the Galerie Léonard et Bina Ellen devoted a solo exhibition to him, in 2019 he exhibited his work at the Casino du Luxembourg Forum d’art contemporain and in 2022 at the Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides.
In addition to preparing an ambitious television project, he is currently producing a video portrait of legendary artist Paul Wong and developing a collective 3D animation project with artists Philippe-Aubert Gauthier, Tanya St-Pierre and Julie Tremble. Philippe Hamelin holds a degree in film studies from Université de Montréal and a Master of Fine Arts from Concordia University. He teaches visual arts at the Cégep de l’Outaouais and the Pavillon (School of Arts and Cultures). He lives and works in Tio’tia:ke/Montréal.
