ATTUNEMENT

Currently in residence for research-creation in collaboration with Maude Arès at AXENÉO7 as part of the performance installation La pomme par laquelle je bois, Simon Labbé will present some of the compositional strategies used in the sound design of their kinetic in situ installation.

The presentation will be followed by La Météorologue, le Jardinier, a workshop on the practice of attunement, exploring questions of scale, the relationships between structure and contingency, and the friction between projected potentials and the present. Participants will be invited to take part in a series of listening, writing, observation, and manipulation exercises using a simplified amplification system, found materials, and the architecture of La Filature.

La Météorologue, le Jardinier, in the words of Simon Labbé

The starting point for my proposal lies somewhere in this question: What if the techniques we use to model the future actively participated in the way it comes about?

La Météorologue, le Jardinier is a workshop inspired by various performance practices and role-playing to explore different ways of constructing worlds. Our time together will consist of collectively creating a fictional world that we will maintain for a while and in which we will be invited to interact with a material that will take different forms depending on the role we play.

This practice will involve multiplying the ways of interpreting a situation in which we will all be involved. It will be a matter of trying, taking risks, modulating our actions according to what we perceive, and finding a form of accuracy in our relationship to the situation. In this sense, it is an exercise in attunement, in sensitive adjustment to the data of a changing situation whose resolution is an ever-elusive horizon.

Together, we will explore through practice questions of composition that are very present in my work and that concern the complex relationships that are woven between a plan and its fulfillment, between the model we make of the world and the world as it unfolds.

Saturday, February 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

La Filature, 80 Hanson St., Gatineau

Workshop followed by discussion, drinks and snacks served

Simon Labbé composes daily. He focuses on listening, writing, and movement as modes of engagement for the deployment of performances, textual and recorded works, architectural installations, and experimental workshops through which he explores the intertwining of beliefs and desires, materials and affects, the real and the imaginary. He is currently conducting research on the role of promises in performance. He often works collaboratively with artists who write, make objects, perform, dance, sing, and play. He has presented excerpts of his work in Europe, Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
