Mai Bach-Ngoc Nguyen

First Work Residency | December 2nd to 16th, 2024

Mai Bach-Ngoc Nguy is a multi/in/disciplinary Vietnamese artist who has broken with the “Thi” in her name. Using installation, action art, documentation and ceramics, her projects revolve around accumulated poetic gestures and moving objects which, when placed in relation, test the limits of her own body in her colonial surroundings.

Her investigations aim to propose tonalities, a set of affects and intensities during the common situation. Self-critical of her own institutionalized ethos, she often decides to create spaces where her proposals reflect on what it means to be an artist in a given environment.

These new places carry with them forward-looking actions, focusing more on possible reverberations, power and, above all, chaos.

Residency Project

” During my residency, I’ll be working on the recording and editing of a performance video that will be part of a forthcoming exhibition, titled L’invisible traversée des oiseaux sourds. Inspired by Pierre Perrault’s 1960 short film Tête-à-la-Baleine and archives of the masses of Vietnamese immigrants by sea, including my own family, this project was my first accepted proposal “supposedly” devoid of performance. Being an artist fundamentally forged by action art and conceptual arabesques, it’s clear that my desire for incrustation will take the form of various adjacent performative forms.”

Mai will be working on her First Work Residency project at the Centre de production DAÏMÔN December 2nd and 16th, 2024.
